Community Languages Schools (CLS) known as after-hours ethnic schools play an important role in maintaining mother tongue or heritage language to Victorian students, complementing the offerings of mainstream school and the Victorian School of Languages. Communiy Languages Schools are not-for-profit, and conducted by community
organisations outside regular school hours, and teach languages at the primary and/or secondary level for a minimum of 2.5 hours a week.
Community Languages Schools have existed in Australia since 1857 when German settlers established the first one in Klemzig, South Australia. A Hebrew part-time school was
established in Melbourne in 1898.
Language teaching in Community Languages Schools is now very extensive, with over 200 communiy schools teaching more than 50 languages to over 40,000 students Victorian students.
